What's going on

Emergency Water Heater Repair, explained

Why flooding gets worse fast

A water heater keeps refilling as long as the cold water supply is open, so a burst tank doesn't stop at the tank's capacity. Closing the cold supply or the main shutoff is the single most important step.

Gas and venting dangers

Soot, scorch marks or a burning smell around the burner can mean exhaust isn't venting. That can put carbon monoxide in the home. If your CO alarm sounds, get out and call 911.

After the emergency

Once the area is safe, the plumber decides whether a part can be repaired or the heater must be replaced, and removes the old unit if needed.

Do this first

  1. Smell gas? Get everyone out. Don't flip switches. Call the gas company from outside.
  2. Water everywhere? Close the cold water valve, or the main water shutoff to the house.
  3. Cut the heat: gas valve to off, or the breaker off for electric.
  4. Keep pets and kids away from hot water and wet electrical areas.
Questions

Emergency Water Heater Repair questions

Will a plumber come out at night?

Availability after hours depends on your town and the time. Call and you'll find out right away what's possible.

Should I drain the tank myself?

Not usually. Draining a hot tank risks burns. Shutting off the water and heat stops the damage.

Does homeowners insurance cover a burst water heater?

Many policies cover sudden water damage but not the heater itself. Take photos before cleanup and call your insurer.
