Water Heater Repair in Colorado
Hard water, cold snaps and fast-growing suburbs whose first tanks are now wearing out. If your water heater has quit, is leaking or can't keep up, call and get a plumber out to your home.
Common water heater problems in Colorado
First tanks in newer subdivisions. Towns like Windsor, Johnstown and Firestone grew fast in the 2000s and 2010s. Many original builder-grade tanks are now 10 to 15 years old and reaching the end.
Altitude and gas burners. At Front Range elevation gas burners get less oxygen, so a dirty burner or blocked air intake shows up sooner as a lazy yellow flame or a pilot that won't stay lit.
Scale in tankless units. Where water is harder, scale builds up in tankless heat exchangers. Error codes and hot-cold bursts often clear up after a proper descale.
Average January lows run about 14°F to 22°F across the towns we cover, with 138 to 178 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA normals).
It depends on the town. Many northern towns drink Carter Lake mountain water (Firestone reports 33 mg/L, which is soft), Denver Water averaged 105 mg/L in 2025, and Brighton treats its own well water.
Xcel Energy in most towns, Atmos Energy in Evans and Black Hills Energy in Frederick
Before the plumber arrives
- Leaking? Close the cold water valve on top of the tank.
- Turn off the gas valve or the breaker.
- Smell gas? Leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside.
Cold water in, more work for your heater
When the ground freezes, the water coming into the tank can be 40°F or colder. Your heater runs longer for every shower, and a worn thermocouple, element or sediment-packed tank is often the first thing to quit in Colorado.

Which towns do you cover in Colorado?
We cover the Northern Front Range, including Windsor, Evans, Johnstown, Firestone, Frederick and nearby towns. Call and we'll check your address.
Why do water heaters fail more in winter?
Colder incoming water makes the heater run longer and harder. Weak parts and sediment-packed tanks tend to fail during the first cold weeks.
Is it worth repairing an old water heater?
If the tank leaks, or it is about 10 or more years old and needs a big repair, replacement is usually the better value. A younger heater with one failed part is usually worth fixing.
